Gary Lande, M.D. – Senior Research Fellow
Gary M. Lande, M.D. is a faculty member of several departments at Montana State University-Bozeman. He is an Adjunct Instructor of Management in the College of Business; an Adjunct Professor of Medical Science in the multi-state WWAMI Medical Program; and an Affiliated Professor of Health and Human Development in the College of Education, Health and Human Development. He teaches courses at MSU on research, human development, media studies, management, strategy, and also consults with a variety of business and industry clients. Gary is on the Advisory Board of the National Center for Medical Leadership.
In addition to his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Magna Cum Laude, from Brandeis University, he earned his Doctorate of Medicine degree from the Yale University School of Medicine. His medical residency was in Psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and his Fellowship was in Child Psychiatry and Family Therapy at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic.
Prior to coming to Montana State University, Gary resided near Philadelphia where he was associated with the University of Pennsylvania and sustained a long-term private practice in psychiatry for children, adolescents, adults, and families, while concurrently maintaining a very active Management, Organizational, and Media Consultation business. He has a long and diverse involvement in all phases of media—serving as a consultant for network children’s programming, hosting his own television show, working as a media consultant, and as a leading communication consultant. His teaching in all areas makes extensive use of film and media analysis and encourages the creation of films, web, and multimedia projects.
He first started making films in 1966 and, as part of his graduate work at Yale School of Medicine, led the efforts of the Haight Ashbury Research Project to document the late 60s by putting cameras in the hands of the community. Since then, he has been extensively involved in the effects of media on youth and has worked on the National Institute of Mental Health’s Task Force on Childhood and Adolescence. He continues to be deeply involved with media in his position as Senior Research Fellow for the Montana Social Norms Project, where he is involved in all phases of research and media development. Like his teaching and consulting, his research and writing interests cover a broad area including public health, medicine, media, sociology (family, gender, childhood, technology, organization, social psychology), management, and organizational development.
